Norwegian Citizen’s Assembly on Sustainable Consumption-utkast

The government has established the country’s first Citizen’s Assembly.

Through this initiative, the government aims to gather the population’s advice and recommendations on the challenges related to overconsumption and what measures are necessary to address these challenges.

The recommendations from the Citizen’s Assembly will be considered to be addressed in the upcoming White Paper on the UN Sustainability Goals.

The Norwegian Government requests input on Sustainable Consumption

We welcome everyone to consider what a future with reduced consumption of goods will look like. In the Norwegian Citizen’s Assembly, 66 members will work to provide recommendations to the government on the following questions:

How can we collectively reduce our consumption of goods while maintaining a good quality of life?

How can we do this in an inclusive and fair manner?

What steps can we take to reduce consumption of clothing, shoes, textiles, electronics, equipment and furniture, and who should be responsible for implementing these changes?

About the Norwegian Citizen’s Assembly

The Citizen’s Assembly is one of many tracks that shall contribute to and ensure
broad involvement in the national sustainability effort and the work on the
White Paper on the UN Sustainability Goals.

The Norwegian Ministry for Digitalization and Public Governance is the
commissioning body on behalf of the Norwegian Government.

SoCentral and We Do Democracy will constitute as a third-party secretariat in order to ensure independence and legitimacy of the Citizen’s Assembly. The third-party secretariat will therefore organize and is responsible for the content of the Citizen’s Assembly meetings. This applies to the design of the process, the program for the gatherings and the organization of the gatherings.

The Citizen’s Assembly’s role is to recommend and advise, not to develop specific solutions or make political decisions. The commissioning body is not obliged politically to follow or adopt the recommendations.
